Sex in the Big City – New York! Could you REALLY do it in your Jimmy Choos?

msindependence 111x150 Sex in the Big City New York! Could you REALLY do it in your Jimmy Choos? You’d want to be keen!

As I was navigating my way through New York City today, from buzzing Manhattan to trendy Greenwich Village and then to the elegant Upper West Side, I noticed that although I saw a lot of people shopping, I didn’t see many women dressed like the ladies from the now legendary Sex And The City.  In fact I felt a little overdressed in a ruffled designer blouse and mini.  My main priority was not getting knocked down or crashed into as I navigated through the crowds, and as my feet got more and more sore from the pavement, I started to really notice  how the locals were dealing with the problem and I noticed that leather and metallic flat soled sandals seemed to be the fashion solution.

So then I got to thinking about the TV shows and movies we ladies generally soak up with glee, drinking in the impossible glamour and delicious fashion of beauty queens breezing around in the highest of high heels, and marching through their highly dramatic days in the most outrageous costumes.  I can tell you that I got approached by far more than one too many smelly, breast gawping would be ‘penniless’ suitor and probable con man, and  would not have liked to be dressed in anything more attention seeking than I was wearing.

So why do we do it?

I think it’s a throw back from our time as cave dwellers.  I think that hurling ourselves into the throng of the great unknown and possibly dangerous crowd of vigorous bargain hunters, is like leaving the cave to collect for the tribe.  We are all hoping to find some treasure, something special we can share, and if we’re very lucky, a ‘peacock’ suit that will transform us to be worn in the safety of our more protective, own tribe environment.  Today I witnessed a woman who’d been punched in the face, and a man get thrown off his cycle onto his poor head and an unsuspecting pedestrian, by a careless passing executive who did what he probably always does,  threw open his taxi door!

But like the most of the crowd around me, I stopped to be sure they were being cared for, marvelled that the police seem to be unafraid and everywhere, and then I pressed on into the  melee and into the shops to please my young.

New York City seems to have a lot of areas like this, full of eager throngs of busy shoppers, but although I don’t do this often, I know there are plenty just as busy in Los Angeles, Hong Kong,  London, Sydney and Melbourne too.  What will we do with all this stuff as a society?    What now that it’s all getting cheaper and cheaper, and the homes we can afford to live in are getting smaller and smaller?

On the subway a young couple who used to work together discussed how a mutual friend lived with his wife and children in a studio apartment with a wall mounted pull down bed apparently making it all possible.  They discussed if they could live like that in exchange for the commute.   They decided that one could probably get used to anything…

but I don’t think my feet could ever get used to dancing around this city in super high heels!  I guess once you figured out what were the right times of day to go out and which streets were going the right direction you could get cabs to let you in to take you places, but if I lived like that I don’t think I could afford the shopping!!

So ladies, my insight today was that Hollywood is still Hollywood and they do love to paint a pretty picture and sell us a bit of glamor… even if we think we’re looking at the ‘real’ fabulous New York of Gossip Girl and SATC ….  none of us needs to spend all our money on shoes and accessories …. and if we find ourselves doing so, perhaps it’s time for a break from the shops and some time working on our inner beauty, and where we can be making a change in the world that gives us greater and more lasting impact and joy.

Love to you from fabulous Manhattan, (which I am LOVING by the way!)

I just want to say thank you Cyd, for your colourful look at a sometimes forgotten art – the joy of simplicity. I recently saw a fascinating Oprah show on what makes women happy around the world. The Danish ethos intrigued me – one lady said they live by the idea of “less space, less things, more life”. WOW, I love that and it’s the feeling I get when reading your article. It’s great to have things you love, beautiful things. Just as long as they don’t take over… Enjoy NY, it is fab!! Elli J x
